What to do when someone dies

Your Step-by-Step Guide

Losing someone is hard. We’re here to make the next steps as simple as possible.

What To Do First

  • Don’t panic. Call us on 01522 754 154. We’ll help you through every step.

  • Was the death expected? If yes, call the person’s doctor (or nurse if they were under care). If not, call 999 for an ambulance. Hospital or care home staff will guide you if the death happened there.

Next Steps

  1. Contact Us: Once the death is verified, we’ll take your loved one into our care and keep you updated.

  2. Medical Paperwork: The doctor completes a form called the MCCD (Medical Certificate of Cause of Death) often referred to as a death certificate. A Medical Examiner then reviews it. If all is in order the Medical Examiner forwards the paperwork to the Registrar. The Registrar will then contact you to register the death. You have 5 days to do this from the day the Registrar contacts you.

  3. Register the Death: The Registrar will tell you what documents you need. You’ll be able to purchase death certificates (usually 3 is enough, £13 each).

  4. Tell Us Once: Use the government’s Tell Us Once service to notify state agencies. You’ll get a code from the Registrar. Learn more.

  5. Plan the Funeral: Once registered, we’ll help you arrange the funeral—burial or cremation—based on your wishes.

  6. Notify Family & Friends: Let people know about the funeral. We can help with obituaries or notices if needed.

  7. Funeral Day: We oversee everything so you can focus on saying goodbye.

  8. After the Funeral: We support you with ashes, memorials, or just a listening ear. You’re always welcome for a chat or a cup of tea.
